The Maison Planat
Daring and entrepreneurship
Abel. After gaining solid experience in business, Abel Planat founded Maison Planat & Cie in 1828 at the age of 27. The griffin, a mysterious, mythical creature, was chosen as its emblem to symbolise dynamism and greatness, two ideas that were very dear to Abel and also represented the cognac trade at the time, a burgeoning industry.
Oscar. Inspired by his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, Oscar took over the family business in 1858. A lawyer by training, with remarkable commercial skills, he extends Planat’s activity to all markets around the world, making the firm one of the most successful companies in the region. Planat Cognac was the third largest cognac brand in the United States at the turn of the 20th century.
Passionate, visionary and humanistic by nature, they embody everything the Planat brand stands for.
Family spirit
Planat, Pionneau and Camus families ran this great house in turn and worked to boost the fame and reach of the Planat brand for almost two centuries.
The brand was handed over to the Soerlie and Nau families (from Norway and France, respectively) in 2018 with the aim to re-engage with Planat’s original identity as an independent family company. Planat continues the founders ambition to make a difference in the time we live in.
Our Philosophy
A conviction: Biological agriculture
Since 2008, the Nau family has chosen to commit to organic agriculture. Thanks to solid partnerships with committed winegrowers, we have today the largest Cognac stock of the G.I.
A method: Dynamic Ageing
The ageing of our eaux-de-vie is at the heart of Planat’s know-how, the key to its authenticity and differentiation. To do so, our Cellar Master watches over three key elements: time, casks, and climate.A
Revolution: Cognac & Mixology
The collaboration with professional bartenders is essential for the development of our brand. The fresh and uninhibited look that mixology brings to spirits inspires us.
